Our first snow
Today we got about 6 inches of snow, the first of the season. It's beautiful! I watched a squirrel through our kitchen window as it grabbed something I couldn't identify exactly -- it looked like a bagel or a sponge at first -- and tried to make its way up high in one of the trees in our yard. It tried 3 or 4 times unsuccessfully and then seemed to be finally making it all the way up when it dropped the treasure. Down it fell back into the snow. I felt sorry for the little guy. He  was trying so hard to get the goodies back home -- or somewhere. I was so intrigued by this critter's antics that I called Greg over to the window to have a look. He explained to me then that he had thrown a little squash (they look like miniature pumpkins) out into the yard the night before. So THAT was what the squirrel had been trying to haul up the tree.  It was then I understood that it was probably trying to get it up the there because it was too big to bury. In fact shortly after, our little friend tried one more time to make it up the tree with the squash in his mouth and finally succeeded in wedging it in the crook of a large branch. I guess it was a good way to keep it safe without having to dig into frozen soil.
