Mall Wart: An old article and a couple of new (to me) facts
A friend just emailed me the link to an article Jim Hightower published over two years ago on the Wal-Mart empire. (See Links,  left.) I've known for a while that Wal-Mart is bad news, but I didn't have all the particulars that Hightower outlines in his article.

In a more recent Utne Reader article (Sept./Oct. 2004) Stephanie Pool mentions a few other unsavory facts about Mall Wart, including the company's policy of preventing abandoned Wal-Marts from being used by other retailers. "As of February 2004," notes Pool, "Wal-Mart possesses 371 dead stores. Half of these building have been vacant for at least two years, and 21 percent have not been used for at least five years...Meanwhile, Wal-Mart opens a new store every 42 hours. (Emphasis is my own.)

Yikes.
